Help - Browse Indexes

The browse indexes list available search terms for AFI Catalog in Advanced search fields. To access a browse index, click the select from a list link that appears next to the search field.

Please note:

• The terms within the browse indexes are arranged alphabetically.
• Windows users can multi-select contiguous terms using Shift+Click and non-contiguous terms using Ctrl+Click. Highlighted terms can be de-selected by moving the cursor to the relevant term and using Ctrl+Click.
• The Title browse page displays entire film titles. Click all film title keywords to display a list of all the individual words that make up the film titles in the AFI servce.
• Director and Cast and crew names are displayed alphabetically by last name.

Look for... button

You can use the Look for... button to accelerate to a certain part of the browse list by typing in your search term (or partial search term) and clicking the Look for... button. The closest match to your term will appear in the browse list with five terms above and below it.

If you do not enter a term into the search box before browsing, the browse index will open displaying the first 11 entries. The Look For... search box will be blank.

If you have entered a term into any other search box before browsing, the browse index will open with the nearest match to that term highlighted. The term entered is displayed above the browse index in the Look For... search box. For example, if you enter jazz into the All Keywords field and browse, jazz will be carried over into the Look For... search box and the browse index will open at the relevant point with jazz already highlighted.

If you have entered more than one term into the search box before clicking the relevant field name button (separated by either Boolean or proximity operators), the last term only will be carried over into the browse index. For example, if you enter jazz or blues into the All Keywords field and click the relevant field name button, blues will be carried over into the Look For... search box and the browse index will open at the relevant point with blues already highlighted.

EXACT operator

If you want to retrieve exactly the word or phrase entered into the search form, you can precede your search term (s) with the EXACT operator. If you select a term from the browses without drop-down menus, the EXACT operator is pasted into the search form automatically by default. See the EXACT operator Help page for more details.

Returning to the search screen

When the desired term or terms are highlighted, click OK to transfer them back to the relevant search field. Each item transferred will be enclosed in double quotes. When you transfer more than one search term from a browse index to a search box, AFI Catalog automatically combines them using the Boolean operator OR.
