Film records contain the following information about each film (if applicable):
- Film title
- Year - Year of release.
- Indicates film was viewed by AFI staff.
- Alternate Title(s) - Foreign, working, pre-release, alternately reviewed, or re-release titles (if available).
- Country - Origin country of film.
- Language
- Production year
- Production company - Company that produced the film, including parent companies and brand names (if available).
- Distribution company
- Release year
- PCA certification number
- Series information
- Production credits - Credit names are linked to a Related films page. See below for detailed credits information.
- Cast - Includes cast member and character name, where applicable. Cast names are linked to a Related films page. See below for detailed credits information.
- Plot summary - Detailed synopsis highlighting the principle aspects of the film.
- Songs/music - Details of music used within the film.
- Genre - Genre headings, such as "drama", "adventure", or "legal".
- Principal subjects - Includes major headings that outline the most important elements of the film, such as aspects of the main character, the main theme(s) of the film, and major geographical locations. Subjects are linked to a Related films page.
- Additional subjects - Includes characters, places or themes that are not as central to the film as the Principal subject headings. Subjects are linked to a Related films page.
- Note - Includes factual information about the film that may enhance knowledge and/or scholarship and correct or explain the credits, plot, production history, critical reception, or place in history of the film (if available).
- Source citations - Lists all contemporary periodical sources used in compiling this information. See Abbreviations for a list of expanded titles.
Note: records may not contain all of the above items.
If a credit name (actor or production member) appears in capitals that means that that person's credit appeared before the opening titles of a film. A name in square brackets (ie [John Smith] indicates an offscreen credit.

- Dance - Includes people who created, choreographed, or staged dances for films
- Makeup, Etc. - Includes people who worked on makeup, hair, and wigs
- Production Miscellaneous - Includes people who worked in areas not covered by any other credit field
- Stand-in
- Animation
- Colour - Includes people who worked on the Colour aspects of films
